hand holds gold medal

As the Summer Olympics play out in Paris, the world watches in awe. The athletes’ testing the limits of the human body inspires us.

Imagine what we could achieve if we trained like athletes to reach our goals!

Should we start physical training now?

An article, “Train like an Olympian: Six Things We Can Learn from Elite Athletes” published by Science Daily in 2014, from the University of Saint Louis research, suggests:

YES! Everyone should train with a physical goal in mind.

Six noteworthy points the article highlights:

  1. Set a goal and break it down
Whether you want to dance all night at your granddaughter’s wedding or participate in the Broad Street Run next spring, you need a plan. Break down the goal into reasonable tasks, and discuss your plan with your doctor. Set time periods or milestones for achieving baby steps.
  2. Cross-train
To reduce the risk of injury, cross train to benefit your overall well-being. Think about ways to improve strength, flexibility, balance and endurance.
  3. Work out with others
The motivation and encouragement from others will help you stick with it. They may also challenge you in different, unexpected ways.
  4. Create a team
Surround yourself with people who can help. You may need an instructor, a physical therapist or a trainer.
  5. Find your motivation
Think about what inspires you. Try listening to music while you train, or reward yourself with each milestone you reach.
  6. Embrace an Olympic attitude
Start with focus, discipline and confidence to help banish self-doubt. You’ll be amazed at what you can do, and each achievement will encourage you to continue.
