Dear Liberty friends,

A famous Irish phrase about teamwork is, “Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine,” which translates to “In each other’s shadow we live.” It perfectly captures the spirit of how close our Liberty teams are and have become—working together, supporting one another, and building a world-class organization that enriches and empowers the lives of older adults.

November 7 officially marks my last day, closing the chapter on my 49-year career. When I began this work in the 1970s, I never imagined the path ahead of me. And in those days, becoming a female CEO was almost unimaginable. Even then, I knew that serving others with compassion and dignity was the most meaningful work I could ever do. It has been my life’s calling, my greatest joy, and my deepest blessing.

These past few months, I have been reflecting on what we have accomplished. I will always be proud of the exceptional culture we’ve created—a culture where people feel valued, talent is nurtured, and staying true to our mission always comes first. Our focus on teamwork and the well-being of staff and residents is the hallmark of our success.

It’s a success that belongs to all of you.

While I am looking forward to retirement, I want you to know how difficult it is to leave you. Over the years, we’ve shared moments that go far beyond work. I’ve celebrated your weddings and babies, grieved losses alongside you, and watched us all grow—personally and professionally. I’ve known some of your families, your joys, and your struggles. I even gave suggestions on potty training tips and techniques that worked for my boys back in my Artman days! I have also witnessed your kindness and dedication to both staff and residents. Those are the moments I will remember most. More than buildings, programs, or milestones, it’s the people—you—who have made Liberty the extraordinary place it is.

Putting things in perspective, I know that I have only carried this torch for a brief moment in Liberty’s story. I find comfort in knowing the work continues—because the universe, in its infinite wisdom, always moves forward. As I pass the torch on to John Barnum, I do so knowing he will guide Liberty with the same care and compassion that have always defined us. I trust him—and all of you—to continue the important work we’ve built together.

And Liberty’s Board of Directors agrees. Beverly Bortz, Board Chair, put it this way:

“Liberty has grown into a vibrant, mission-driven organization that embodies compassion and excellence. The Board expresses its deepest gratitude for Luanne’s years of service and has full confidence that John Barnum will continue to advance Liberty’s mission with the same integrity and heart that have long defined our success.”

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your love and support along this incredible journey.

Most of all, thank you for your leadership as a Liberty team member. I will miss you deeply, and will always hold you close to my heart. May God continue to bless you.

With loving gratitude,
